Rider training and fitness requirements
Full rider option: Rider completes every day from start to finish at campsite or accommodation
Light rider option: Rider rides until lunch time and then completes day in backup vehicle, following the other riders.
Price: We charge the same price for both level of riders
Fitness is important and riders will have to train for the tour. The fitter you are the more you will enjoy the ride and enjoy the landscapes instead of struggling on your bike. If you are comfortable riding a 50km mountain bike race/ride-without being totally tired out-you will easily make the LIGHT option of the tour. If you have done a multi-day stage race-something like Sani2c you will easily make the FULL rider option. The tour does include some difficult (rocky, sandy) terrain especially the day riding to Rostock Ritz from Valley of a 1000 hills but riders have the option to take the main road instead of the back-country track on this day. Namibia’s heat and sometimes uneven sand and rocky terrain is probably more of a challenge than distance orientated fitness on this tour . 7 Days of the 12 Tour days are spent riding. It is a tour, not a race, so riders have all day to complete the required distance, half day for LIGHT riders. Every day’s riding distance is specified on our detailed tour itinerary below:
We will be happy to answer any questions relating to the route, please send us an email. email@example.com
Detailed tour itinerary:
Day 1: Swakopmund
We will meet at around 3h30pm in Swakopmund at Alte Brucke holiday resort. After a long drive, we get the chance to settle into our accommodation and take a walk down to the beach for a sundowner, if time allows. We depart for dinner at around 6:45pm to one of the most famous restaurants in Swkaopmund, Kuckis Pub and restaurant. Tonight, we will get the opportunity to meet our logistical crew, tour leaders and fellow riders and sample the best Eisbein and German beer Swakopmund has to offer. Over dinner we have the chance discuss the tour program and route for the next few days and get ample opportunity to ask questions. Camping
Day 2: Swakopmund – Blutkoppies (Drive in vehicle)
After a hearty breakfast at Alte Brucke holiday resort, we must remove all our luggage from our rooms before taking the morning to either discover Swakopmund and do some last-minute shopping or going on a quadbike adventure of the Dunes (at own expense). We will meet at around 12 noon for a nice fish a chips lunch at a pre- designated spot and after lunch we will start heading out to our first night under the stars in the desert at Blutkoppies campsite . The logistical team will go ahead and set up camp so that once we arrive we can start settling in and get our bikes setup and riding gear ready for the start of our mountain bike adventure the following morning. Camping
Day 3: Blutkoppies – Ganab Pan (Cycle -60Km)
Our first day of cycling has arrived and after an early breakfast, we will have a few pre- tour pictures and then hit the road to start our adventure. Our plan is to stop every 20km for a water and snack break but whenever you feel like taking a picture or a break, you can do so…it is a tour not a race! We follow the Bloedkoppie Tinkas 4×4 Trail where you will encounter typical Namib Desert scenery; interesting rock formations, quiver trees and quite often Springbuck, Gemsbok and mountain Zebra. We have lunch on the road before continuing to our next camp at Ganab Pan in the Northern section of the Namib Naukluft National Park. It is a great first day of riding to get the limbs moving and the heads clear. Camping
Day 4: Ganab Pan – Namib Valley of a Thousand Hills (Cycle -80Km)
After a glorious evening under the stars at Ganab Pan we are up and in the saddle early after breakfast to try and beat the Namibian sun. Today we will be cycling mostly on gravel roads, criss- crossing the great Namib Naukluft park and then make our way down through the Kuiseb river and on to the Namib’s Valley of a Thousand Hills. The Valley is located on a highland with a panoramic view of the Guab Valley. The valley is riddled with thousands of hills creating a photographer’s heaven. This natural scenery creates a fairytale feel to a place otherwise known for its dry and arid conditions. We arrive at our campsite with a fantastic view across the plains in the late afternoon, our tents ready, drinks cold and dinner on the fire. Camping
Day 5 Valley of a 1000 Hills -Rostock Ritz Lodge (Cycle- 40Km)
After a good night’s rest and a beautiful sunrise over the Guab Valley we get ourselves and our bikes ready for the most technical day of the tour, we are cycling on back- country jeep tracks across the local farms to our next destination, Rostock Ritz lodge. Those of us not up for all the technical riding can opt to go back to the main gravel road and cycle to the Rostock Ritz without any problems. Our FULL riders will love the challenges the day has in store, as we cross riverbeds and climb up and down through the highlands. We have lunch at the old Rostock farmhouse, escaping the heat in the shade provided by the old house before tackling the last stretch and a well-deserved rest at the lodge swimming pool. Camping
Day 6: Rostock Ritz Lodge (Rest day)
After a lovely dinner and a good night’s rest we have a lovely relaxing day ahead of us , in the late afternoon, we will jump in the vehicles and head for the next farm where one of the Namib desert’s most famous guides will be taking us on a Living Desert Tour. An Excellent opportunity to learn more of life under the hot sun and in the dunes of the Namib. We end our excursion with a lovely sundowner and snacks, reflecting on the magic of our surroundings before heading back to the Lodge for a great dinner. Camping
Day7: Rostock Ritz -Solitaire (Cycle – 67Km)
After a good day’s rest , we are ready to tackle the rest of the tour! This morning we will be cycling on to the main road before cutting across the neighboring farms. It is a wonderful day of cycling and we have will have the opportunity to ride some single track at lunch time on a farm where the owner is an avid cyclist. We finish off at our campsite near Solitaire in the afternoon after a good day in the saddle. The Unbounded Team is ready to treat us to a lovely meal around the camp fire before we turn into our tents under the stars. Camping
Day 8: Solitaire – Namib Naukluft mountain camp (Cycle -80Km)
After an early start, we have a short cycle to one of the most well-known attractions in Southern Namibia at a little place called the Solitaire bakery. It doesn’t matter what time we get to the bakery as it is always the right time for a piece of the famous Apple pie and a lovely cappuccino. Once we have filled our bellies with the best that the bakery has to offer, it’s time for a greatl 80km cycle towards Bullspoort at the back of the Naukluft mountains. We have lunch next to the road before making our way to a little oasis in the Mountains, where we will stay for the next 2 nights. Camping
Day 9: Namib Naukluft National mountain camp (Rest day)
Our second day in the Naukluft Mountains will be our second rest day of the tour. We will have breakfast at leisure and then we can do some housekeeping or go for a short hike on one of the nearby trails and have a swim in one of the rock pools in the mountains. We return to camp for a relaxed lunch prepared by the crew and a lazy afternoon around camp. Camping
Day 10: Namib Naukluft National mountain camp – Sesriem (Cycle -80km)
Its time to get our bikes and ourselves ready for our last long day of cycling. We leave the mountains behind us and start making our way down towards Sesriem, our day is spent cycling mostly on gravel roads and a few jeep tracks as we cross over farms to take a few shortcuts to our destination. We will be doing around 80km for the day on our way to Sesriem camp, where we will be spending our last 2 nights together. Camping
Day 11: Sesriem (Cycle -50Km)
Our second last day and one of the highlights of the Namib mountain bike tour has arrived, we will have an early start and enter the gates into the National Park at sunrise. We have the luxury today of cycling on a tar road all the way between the dunes, Springbuck and other animals crossing our path until we reach our final goal, Dune 45. Here the Unbounded Team will have a lovely brunch ready for the riders and chilled champagne to celebrate a great ride! Before we eat we will have the opportunity to take some photos and to climb Dune 45. After brunch, we load the cycles and take the vehicles to visit the famous Sossus vlei pan and Sesriem canyon. We end an amazing day with a fabulous dinner at our campsite. Camping
Day 12: Sesriem – Windhoek (Drive in vehicle)
On our final morning, together we must get up bright and early, have a coffee and breakfast, say our good byes and jump on the bus to catch our flights out of Windhoek. Safe travels until we meet again on our next tour! Ideally flight out of Windhoek should be scheduled for the afternoon to allow ample time to get to the airport before departure time.
